Old and New Asylia Decrees of Macedonian Cities for Kos: the Contours of Autonomy
The four new decrees by Macedonian cities recognizing the inviolability of the sanctuary of Asklepios at Kos in 243 BC which were published in 2020 are examined in this communication in order to highlight issues pertaining to the autonomy of the Macedonian cities, the diplomatic language used both by the cities and by the Koan theoroi, and the repercussions of the terminology used for our understanding of the nature of the Macedonian state.
