What is Cisalpine Celtic?
The ca. 400 epigraphical documents of Celtic in the Cisalpine area (Lombardia, Piemonte, Ticino), written in the local « Lugano alphabet », are usually considered to encode two different linguistic strata: the older, epichoric Lepontic, and the Gaulish spoken by immigrants from the Transalpine area in the 4th to 1st century BC. The talk will show how this distinction has grown out of 170 years of research, and discuss whether it can be maintained based on the current evidence.
